By Bigpoolman
The uncropped version of yesterday's upload. Very interested in which one people prefer and naturally any comments / suggestions.

Coming straight from the cropped version you posted yesterday...

There are several shots in here waiting to be isolated... This is a slight miss, partly because of the tonal stuff (Moira's mod yesterday added just enough punch, and this needs a simiilar breathing on), and partly because the framing doesn't quite work, for me.

I love the reverse S-curve of the pool, and the way that the shapes behind continue the wavy motion.

And i think I see what y ouwere aiming for, with diagonal lines going into both bottom corners. However, the cut-off pool on the left spoils the idea for me - I actually want to find out what moving a foot to the right and excluding it does - what it opens up on the right.

I don't know, so I'll crop, making a slightly uneasy semi-panoramic vertical frame.

Adventurous, in weather that must have felt cutting to the bone!

I looked at this yesterday, and couldn't quite formulate my thoughts. John has done that for me.

The foreground pool is a fabulous shape, and portrait format follows it up through the frame. So this doesn't need the various distractions on the left. Stick to the main story.

Boost contrast just a wee bit. It can work wonders for foreground textures, make them tactile, immediate. And then b&w.

All makes sense thanks.

The cunning plan was to have the two diagonals coming from the bottom corners and the line of green rocks from the top left. S bend of pools take you through the picture to the river and columns of rocks beyond.

Having crammed everything in as usual, I suppose thats why I cropped it to the other version.

You can see a different angle which I have uploaded as a mod, which I think is cleaner and simpler.

I do like your version. We are gradually moving away from the bigger picture and into the abstract.

These uploads have actually made me want to visit Glen Etive, the big set-piece landscapes have never done that for me. Too much, too remote...

Thanks. This one was only a couple of feet away from the previous and I took this one specifically for the shapes, as opposed to the colours of the other one.
There were plenty of other images to capture, brilliant location.

I've been back to my pictures from June 2014... Was this (see new 'mod') the place?

And looking at my shot, we were obviously thinking along fairly similar lines, compositionally...

Hard to say John, I don't think its quite the same place. I was prob 10 mins or so drive down Glen Etive from the Buachaille, near the top end of the gorge and before you get to the fenced off area.

I am only guessing but your image looks like a bit lower down the river based on the far bank looking lower. Its all nice though, I like the shape of the pool that you have captured.

We'd set off up the sideroad, and reached a point that seemed QUITE far enough up a single-track road for non-walkers. You can - if you know it's there - see the road heading on up the Glen in my picture, up on the right. There's a telegraph post beside it...

Ah ok, not been up the side road. One for next time maybe.
