Collard Lizard

By billma
We spent another weekend in the Western Utah Desert...an awesome and desolate place This is another view of a Great Basin Collard Lizard. Found widely in the American Southwest deserts. Feeds on insects, some plant material and will eat other lizards. They have powerful jaws and can inflict a painful bite. Range in size from 6-13. The red on the sides identifies it as a female in breeding season.

They are a fairly cooperative photographic subject. The challange is handling the bright desert lighting.

Brilliant again. Great shot notwithstanding the 90+ degree weather in the middle of the day!
