Cafe Hawelka

By bliba

Leopold Hawelka

Josefine Hawelka

Cafe Hawelka in Vienna's 1st district represents one of the last great Central European traditions of literary and artistic coffee houses, such as Cafe Central before the First World War and Cafe Herrenhof before the Second World War. It is still run by the Hawelka family, as Leopold Hawelka and his wife Josefine once did 80 years ago when they opened the cafe

I was in Vienna this weekend and met friends from Germany.
Since a visit to Vienna includes a visit to a cafe, we visited the famous Cafe Hawelka. Despite its fame, it is still a cosy cafe ..... the outside world that has changed, not Cafe Hawelka. It still represents a refuge for many artists, writers and musicians.

The picture above the waiter (top right) shows Josefine & Josef Hawelka.

thanks for looking

Excellent monochrome candid reportage Portrait.
Love the ‘motion blur’ of the waiter’s right hand.

I love that hand, moving so fast that it disappears. And I'm out of UAs, for now...

I think you have shown us Hawelka before; a second visit is a bonus.
A waiter's hand moves a long way in 1/30 sec. 🙂

A wonderful moment in time; the customers, the stand (how many people have hung their hats and coats there?), the perfectly caught waiter, and the essential element - the portrait looking down on a timeless tableau. The picture puts us in that place, even if we can't be there.

An enjoyable write-up about this café, taking us back before WWI and up to the present day. It is good to know that some places still manage to survive in these difficult times. When did last see a table getting cleaned with such vigour?

The view point really makes this image, Ollie. A lovely nostalgic location for you.

Love the formality of the waiters' uniforms in these Venetian cafes. Adds style without necessarily adding formality to the whole cafe.

Better late than never...
Will civilised places like this survive another generation, except as museum exhibits, I wonder?

Looks to be a good traditional cafe. A well composed and framed image, Ollie, just the right shutter speed used to record some movement in the waiter's hand - wouldn't have worked as well had he been totally static 😃👍🏻

Excellent Ollie… I just saw a show on BBC about the Vollpension Cafe in Vienna where they bring in senior citizens to showcase their baking skills and teach the younger generation how to make their old recipes. What a great concept to bring old an young together…
