With warty skin like this, I'd say they were Toads. Cracking picture, but toads should not be spawning this early,even in Cornwall. A sharp cold snap could kill off the spawn. Result, less Toads, more slugs and flies. There is nothing good about these mild winters.
Unfortunately the feared for cold snap is forecast fornext week. One handy tip I read in the latest BBC wildlife mag is that for frogspawn you can put some bubble wrap over the top to insulate it if the weather does turn. I realise it's not quite the same for toad spawn as it'a laid in strings, but might be worth a try.
I think toad spawn is usually laid a little deeper than frog spawn which tends to float on the surface, so in theory it should be able to handle the cold a little better.
