It’s all about the light and the layers, a flat surface imbued with depth, like a rich tapestry. And the way that the surface damage, the scraped, torn surface seems to perfectly compliment the image underneath.

Thanks early birds. As Alan says, there are layers upon layers of artwork here and sometimes they merge into each other. And as Jeff says, the eyes had been ripped out, and I found that powerful.
The square crop works extremely well here Moira, an excellent comp' with great light and colour.

This sort of shot for me is very much about selecting a rectangular frame from the big, untidy whole.
I'm deliberately not commenting on interpretation, I'm leaving that to other. But when I see a face that has been significantly 'adjusted' I find that interesting.
I've now got a b&w conversion that I quite like, with a bit of twiddling with the colour channels. It will appear some time.
