Thoughts

By Bogwoppett
I decided to put up a simpler picture next.
It's not flash or showey, but I love it's mood and feel.
I feel it draws you in, and you empathise with the subject.

Taken with available (day)light. Model is Jessica, who is normally a lot more cheerful. However I asked her to think of a loved one who has had to go far away into danger, and that really put the mockers on her!
-miserable *** aren't I?!!!

Hope you like it!

Nicely converted to black and white. I might just crop the top of the image where you can see the edge of the cushion.
Jeanie

edit - I have tried the crop to see if it works. Put the result in the mod section for you to look at.

Well spotted Jeanie, you put your finger on it!
i spent a while debating cropping the top, but then i felt it got a lttle too tight and claustophobic. Still can't decide what to do about it!
So I thought if you can't be sure, then stop messing with it, and left the shot as it was in the viewfinder. Trust first instincts when you're full of doubt!

Glad you don't mind. I just found that dark area at the top distracting, and draws the eye away from the main focal point (the model)

I have come back to this one a couple of times - decided I like it. From your description, the model's expression definately portrays a sense of sadness or foreboding, so works well. Agree with Jeanie, small crop off the top would make it more pleasing to the eye. Only my opinion and I like the capture.

I love the atmosphere, and also the smooth grey tones that fit perfectly this melancolic picture.
About the crop, I think you're so plunged into the model's look, that it doesn't disturb the eye at all.
Congrats too for your other nude shot. Very impressive.
Keep them coming...

Hi Steve, croped a little tighter, removed some distracting blemishes with the healing tool, and then i used the High Key effect in Virtual Photographer,a little plugin for PS, added a small border.

Nice shot I mean.

hi guys, and thanks for your constructive comments - this is a really good site!

As this is a site that allows such things, then I believe a discussion is necessary regarding the mods.
teena, very interesting to see the result of the high key effect, made me think.
however i think it's too much. its like having a pic of a couple of cute puppies, then adding soft focus and sticking the pic on a box of chocolates. It strays into over-the-top sentimentality and the pic of two cute puppies doesn't need it, they're two cute puppies, they carry the pic!
And its my opinion that this does not need such a change!! Its an effective change and had me scratching my chin, don't get me wrong, but just not necessary.
However I'm becoming convinced you're right about cropping!

Perhaps I'll mod my own shot, hows that for a debate?!!

Clint! thanks i don't mind at all, it's interesting and strangely weird to have people mess with my little vulnerable shot - I have to guard against over-protectiveness!!

i think the smoothing is too much, for much the same two puppies as before.
the duo toning - i think i like the effect, but scratchy-chin and hmmms still ongoing!!

Good mod, though, i can see your point.

The concensus seems to be 'crop the top'.

I too added a modification (before reading any comments). I did it because you allowed it and it is sort of picture I like to play with.....not because I think your shot needs improving.
My opinion is (for what it is worth) that the author took and posted the shot - unless they asked for advice/help in how to alter/improve it, the shot stands as a good shot in the authors eyes and we have NO right to say otherwise.

I love your uploads so far and look forward to seeing many more

A beautiful shot, had a go at a mod - hope you don't mind! Its a great shot in the first place, I usually use the mod function (if someone has allowed it) to improve / practise my 'skills'.

In a high key mood at the moment so just trying that out.

Looking forward to seeing more pics - great ones so far!
