Banning Negativity

Time for a rant I suppose !

I have loved being on ePz. I wish some things were different, but I appreciate that some of the things I don't happen to like will be the favourites of others. I have had so many encouraging comments on my photographs from people on here - not all glowing praise by any means - after all I have only been taking photos for around 40 years and still consider that I have a lot to learn.

The things I like most on here are the ways in which people at all levels can find something to inspire them. My own experience shows that there are plenty of people who support others in all sorts of ways. This encouragement and motivation is especially useful for people new to photography, or new to a particular field or technique. ePz is about inspiring and encouraging such personal development.

So why a rant ?

Well I recently became a member of an ePz group called "Let the Creativity Flow". It was set up at the end of December by Zoe ( Mototaur). I love to be creative with my images and so it seemed perfect for me. I have run community websites before and know how tough it can be to reach the stage of development where things build up their own momentum, so I offered to help Zoe. I did a review of a free web based app called iPiccy. I did this to set up a section where Free and Cheap software that might allow people to get into creative photography. I used iPiccy because I use it when I am doing training for unemployed and socially marginalised people as part of the work of the "not for profit" social enterprise that I run. It always goes down well with people new or relatively new to photography. They get quick results. Then I set up a challenge to people in the group to submit images they had created with the software to a gallery.

All I was trying to do in this was to help get people interested in being creative. I was devastated when a reply took the form of an accusation that i was trying ti gain "free advertising " for the software. Why ? I have no connection with the makers, It is free to use anyway. One of the main points of ePz is that of trying to support others by making available information on techniques, software and other things that will help them to progress their photography. Why this gratuitous criticism. and especially why this criticism from someone who uses their profile as an advert for their own photo holiday business ?

I can't understand it. Why do they want to be so negative about everything. Why knock people who are trying to help others. How can they not see that not everyone is at their level of experience ( though not always "quality" ! ). I just don't get it. i love photography and want to help as many others to love it as I can.

Anyway, rant over. I will persist with ePz despite these people, because of all of the wonderful people on here who feel differently and who have been so helpful to me during my time on the site.

And just in case anyone is interested in the photography behind all of this these are the start and finish results of the image that i used to start the challenge that led to this rant !!!!!!

and I didn't make a masterpiece from it, but boy did I have some fun turning it into this.......

I used to use lots of free plugins etc when I was starting out with the old piccy taking game - I plan to see if I can remember which were my favourites and then join the group and add them.

I don't use many of them now but it was great experimenting without having to spend a fortune! It was both fun and useful finding out what could be done with images.

That's all Smile I'm supposed to be working.......

It's fun to play around with filters and plugins and you can learn a lot by doing it. If that's what you like, then carry on. People don't have to join in if they don't like it. And don't take bad comments seriously. There are always some who want to put people down but when you look at their work quite often you'll find they're not so hot themselves. So ignore them. Wink

PS: @ Alison - you're always supposed to be working. Tongue

Hi Peter.
You where a very welcome and creative member of the group. I really was greatful for your support and help.
I was not against people leaving negative comments in the group. everyone is allowed to see things differently.
I closed the group as people where joining just to leave nasty negative, offensive and rude comments. when the group was starting I did not want to attract these sort of members that where joining.
There where to many to ban.
I also did not realise that what was in the group did not stay in the group. EPZ add everything to the community of the website.
People where arguing with each other . yes it made the group popular but this was not what my group was about. sadly some people just have to destroy what they do not understand or someone who ,does something these people can not do. I found it very stressful running a group on EPZ . There is no way for group owners to delete comments in forums so they can police their groups and the only thing they can do is ban people and report to EPZ asking them to remove the comments. I also felt that just telling people to ignore the bullying is not dealing with the issues that this site clearly have issues with bullies.
I felt that the lack of Not being able to regulate my group stressful ,also that everything was sent to the EPZ community area for anyone to comment on. I did not see the point of having a group. I felt I was better off just using EPZ forums. Therefore I decided to close the group and it solved the problems I had. So Now I post my tips in my blogs and photo gallery to help others.
I am sorry if closing the group upset others who wished to learn. I engourage you to keep experimenting and trying new things. try and find lovely people on here who like what you like.
best wishes
