Good exposure for the shade under the tree, did you use a bit of fill flash?

Fill flash is used to brighten deep shadow areas on photographs taken outdoors on sunny days. To use fill flash, your aperture and shutter speed are set to correctly expose the background, and the flash is fired to lighten the foreground. Generally you reduce the output of your flash to simply "fill in" the shadow areas. Hope I have explained it clearly and it is of sme use to you.
