Blue Bedroom, South Uist

By Camairish
Mairi MacInnes was born, the last of eight, in one of the bedrooms in this house near Loch Carnan in the early 1930s. Her father ran the croft and grew enough vegetables (principally potatoes, carrots and cabbage) to last the whole year. Potatoes were cultivated in lazybeds and stored in small huts he constructed from turf bricks. There was no road access to the house and so all heavy goods (range cooker, furniture etc) were brought in by boat to the shore and carried up the brae to the house. The house is still in Mairi's family but has been empty for many years.
