After much research in looking for a 85mm lens I was happy with results from I ended up getting rid of my canon 85 f1.2L II and getting the Samyang 85mmXP f1.2.
The sharpness is in a different league to the canon at f1.2. The image was converted sharpened and curves adjustments applied. I would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on the image

Hi.
Could you please provide the metadata and the original unedited picture please?

Of course, some of the EXIF data won't be there, given the manual nature of the Samyang lens. But I'm assuming f/1.2: that's the justification for the lens, isn't it?

I'm impressed by this, connoisseur of 85mm lenses as I consider myself to be. You've got the eyelashes and the lips perfectly sharp - no mean feat with a DSLR and manual focus. I wonder - did you do any additional processing? If so, can we see the unprocessed original as well, please?

I know that the Canon lens, revered as it is for its ability to provide differential focus, is not actually anywhere near the top of the league for sharpness, and more recent designs, including the new Canon f/1.4 and the Samyang surpass it easily.

The composition and pose are downright confrontational, and Faye's looks and your technical finesse carry it off, for me. I'd vote in the main gallery, and very possibly give an award.

A further thought, maybe... Have you looked at the Lensbaby Velvet 85? A stop slower, to be sure, but with incredibly interesting qualities, if sheer sharpness is not your sole criterion for excellence. And my guess is that you may be as much concerned with how and where you can create softness as with peak sharpness - though I may be wrong about this.

Hi, I will hopefully have my mod ready later on and present my thoughts with it. Jake Hicks has got an interesting article on lensbaby 85mm velvet along with images in various apertures, so you can get an idea about the results it produces.

At 56kb, this file is much too small to evaluate at all in the critique gallery.

On the face (!) of it, it appears to have has post processing blur applied and eyes sharpened excessively.

If you have a larger file, and I sure you do, you can upload it on this page by clicking the modification button, select Upload, the select the largest jpeg you have. You can then also provide the exif details at the same time. Also let us know what post processing you have done.

Regards

Willie
