Bellagio Fountains - Las Vegas

By canonfan46
Hi all,
I was in Las Vegas recently, a photographers heaven.

I took this shot of the Bellagio Fountains. Hand Held @ 1/40 f4 1000 ISO

I did a little fiddling around in PS but do'nt ask me what.

I like the result but I would like to know what the pro's make of it.
Any comments appreciated. (good or bad)

They're impressive close up. As some other night shots, this would be better with some detail in the sky...ie shoot at dusk when there is a lovely deep blue, rather than at night when it's black.
I prefer the construction of v1, and the only other thing is the perspective effect from looking up; I'd prefer it straight or more pronounced for effect. You've done well to not overexpose the water and blow the highlights, but you might be able to make more of the hotel with some judicious processing.

By the way, there is a great view from the Eiffel Tower over the road, where you can look down on the hotel and see the patterns in the water better.

Both images are interesting, John, and you have tried different angles to good effect. I expect it was difficult to capture the building without the water covering most of it.
I like the slant in V1 and wouldn't want to straighten the verticals because the effect would be lost. But I do think there is a bit too much of the fountains on the right.
V2 is my favourite of the two, perhaps because of the symmetry. But I wasn't sure about the inclusion of the fountains on either side. These nicely frame the building, but I wondered if there might be more impact without them. Sometimes less is more.
So, I've done two modifications. For V1, I cropped, adjusted levels and cloned out the bit of light at the top of the building.
For V2, I cropped again, reduced highlights and adjusted levels.

Both pretty good images of the type. Think I prefer v2 slightly over all, although the compositionnice in v1 and rather more originalf.

Ive looked at these images a couple of times. Ive been there also a few times, and those fountains are impressive, and difficult to shoot.

So I came back today, and thought I prefer V2. I like the difference in V1. but V2 has more of the classic look to it.

Its overexposed, - thats the main issue, and down where those powerful floodlights are is lost. Pamelas mod removes some of that effectively with a narrower crop. I though I might suggest a different approach. Ive loaded a load to show what I did.

the crop is square, and has black sky added to the top; the image has been multiplied at 30% to darken overall; Ive applied sharpening; and the tricky bit, - Ive kept some of the side fountain water by curving both sides inwards.

I hope you like it.

Regards

Willie
