Interesting effect. You could take things further by:
Make a selection of each segment,
Copy each to a new layer,
Use the move tool to shift each segment outwards and rotate some slightly.
This should give a king of broken/shattered look to the photo.

Thanks Eddie, it would be easy to do as you suggest as each rectangle was on its own layer. One for the future on another rainy day
