Colchicum macrophyllum flowers in the autumn in olive groves, phrygana and abandoned fields at medium altitudes (between 200 and 750m). The flower is pink-purple but very rarely it can be white. The large (up to 30cm) glossy leaves appear after the flowers and last until early the following summer. Apart from Crete, colchicum macrophyllum is also found in the eastern Aegean islands and south-west Turkey.
