colchicum macrophyllum

By CarolG
A rest from the butterflies and bugs/beasties today, I thought I would upload a flower for you all. I spotted this beauty earlier in the week, a sure sign that summer is almost over.

Colchicum macrophyllum is an autumn flowering species of colchicum, growing in olive groves, abandoned fields and at the roadsides. The flowers are a pinky purple, but on rare occasions a white variety may be spotted. The large glossy leaves appear after the flower has faded, and last up until the following summer. Apart from Crete, these flowers can be found in the eastern Aegean islands and West Turkey.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone, I will be heading down to the beach shortly Smile

A beauty.

Spoilt for choice here, Carol! Like all three images. I like how the stamens stands out from the 'softness' in V3, but prefer the clean-cut look of the other two - V1 takes my vote! SmileSmileSmile

They are all beautiful, a little like the autumn crocus that grows here. You have such a variety of flora and fauna, I've never been to Crete but it's definitely on my list!

What a sweet and delicate little beauty!

All 3 images work very well. V1 for the detail especially on the anthers. V2 for the colour richness...and of course V3's dreamy softness.

In my opinion you went with the right choice to lead with...V1 wows me the most Smile
