giant hornet?

By CarolG
About three times the length of a normal hornet, this huge creature was enjoying the sunshine on one of the roses in my garden. I wasn't too keen ongetting too close to it, so it was a case of holding the camera at arms length and pointing it in the direction of the creature, hoping that I could get some reasonable pics. Fortunately it seemed a bit drowsy in the sun and settled for quite a while, seemingly unperturbed by the camera being so close.

Many thanks for being so patient with me, I managed to achieve quite a lot in the garden over the weekend, and look forward to getting back to clicking and commenting again today.

Spiders I like, hornets I don't. You were very brave getting this close. Great shots considering the way you were holding the camera.

Great set of shots, lovely detail.

It's a hoverfly - I believe it's a female Volucella zonaria.

Beautifully caught! Yes, it is a hover fly. The antennae are placed in the middle of it's 'forehead', whereas with hornets/bees/wasps the antennae are placed either side of it's head. You've caught some beautiful details - very brave of you, especially as you thought this was a giant hornet! Wink

Excellent macro work as usual - not native this one to the UK so it has me stumped - a hornet yes but what one?

A brilliant set of close ups, I reckon it's a huge hoverfly, if it was a hornet my Uncle Adie "Tomcat" would never have dared to view it in large as he's petrified of wasps!
