green huntsman spider

By CarolG
This upload is especially for Isabel (chinga), who loves anything greenWink

Sparassidae are a family of spiders known as huntsman spiders because of their speed and mode of hunting. As adults, huntsman spiders do not build webs, but hunt and forage for food: their diet consists primarily of insects and other invertebrates, and occasionally small skinks and geckos. They live in the crevices of tree bark, but will frequently wander into homes and vehicles. They are able to travel extremely fast, often using a springing jump while running, and walk on walls and even on ceilings. They also tend to exhibit a ‘cling’ reflex if picked up, making them difficult to shake off and much more likely to bite. The females are fierce defenders of their egg sacs and young. They will generally make a threat display if provoked, but if the warning is ignored they may attack and bite.

Carol I find your images and descriptions endlessly fascinating, you really should publish a book of insects in my garden (or something similar).

This is a particulalry fine shot and it is definitely GREEN, even colour-blind old me can see that. Grin

I will remember to be careful if I ever spot one of these - but I don't think we have these in my part of the world. I do have a nice tarantula living over by my fence though Smile

It ain't easy being green - I guess that explains some of this spider's attitude............

If you had difficulty in seeing your previous upload of the red and black fellow, how on earth did you manage to spot this rather fiercesome, by all accounts, spider Carol? By all accounts a lady to steer well clear of!
