mini monastery

By CarolG
Itís strange how we are inclined to ignore what is on our doorstep, and travel further afield with our cameras to take photos. This small, but very beautiful, 16th century monastery lies in the hamlet of Gallos, some 2 kms from my home and in between my village and the town of Rethymnon, overlooking the coastline towards Georgioupolis. I have passed it so many times, but each time the main gates appeared to be locked. However, I hit lucky this time and saw a couple of people inside the gates, and asked if they would mind if I took a look around. One of the guys spoke very good English, he told me I was welcome to browse, and that the monastery was now in the process of being renovated inside, presumably to attract the tourists next year. I hope you enjoy the selection of images taken in this idyllic spot barely a stoneís throw from my home.

A delightful series giving us an all round view of this lovely location and it's feline residents. You are right though, the only time that we take notice of the things in our immediate vicinity is when we have visitors, and as that hardly ever happens, we cheerfully ignore the opportunities on our own doorstep.

What a special 'discovery ' that was hidden in plain sight Carol Smile A super and informative set
Great shots, and so nice to see somewhere different. I agree that the cats and the courtyard images are the star shots and should be given their own postings! Would love to see more shots of where you live.

So often I too have ignored possibilities nearer to home but of recent, being unable to travel so far, I have come to appreciate such: this is an excellent set documenting this wee monastery and it's surroundings.

That is so true, Carol. Even something as simple as daily-blooming flowers in the garden are often overlooked as photo ops (me speaking from personal experience).

I'm so glad you grabbed the opportunity and asked the people if you could go in. Nice one Smile

Wonderful shots you got of this beautiful place. I especially like Vs 5, 6 and 9.

What a very beautiful place Smile A delightful set, Carol, and you're right about ignoring things on our doorsteps - it wasn't until I got seriously into photography I visited the ruins of our local castle, about 20 minutes walk away, after living in the area for about 10 years! Love the purrfectly posed pussycat in pic 5 too! SmileSmile
