powder blue

By CarolG
I went out for a walk yesterday and managed to find a river bed that still had running water, though pretty dirty and smelly! I was hoping to find some dragonflies, and I wasn't disappointed. This beautiful powder blue creature came and settled on a stone nearby and allowed me to take several shots. I was hoping that he/she would settle on something a bit more photogenic, and with a more pleasing background, but she wouldn't oblige, so I had to make do with rocks and a very unsatisfactory backdrop! However, I was delighted to capture this magnificent coloured insect, and trust someone will come up with an ID.

Do go large if you have the time, it really is one of the most beautiful dragonflies I have ever seen.

had a quick look online - closest this resembles is a Blue Skimmer dragonfly that has a powder blue thorax - i'm no expert but this seems a near match Grin

anyway, beautiful captures of a wonderful looking creature - just have the bog standard green ones here but they can be good in their own way. stunning detail and i think the background here is more than suitable for the photoshoot.

keep the beauty flowing Grin

Hi Carol...great capture of what must have looked a brilliantly coloured dragon......i have seen a Black -tailed Skimmer over here and in the sun(???) it really stands out.
I don't think it's a Blue Skimmer(wrong country)......but ended up with .........
Orthetrum brunneum - Southern Skimmer.........found it online @ ...
www.cretewww.com/odonata/index.htm
This gives you Crete dragons > checklist > Southern Skimmer >more info > to pic taken in Crete in 2005.There is asimilar bodied one..the Keeled Skimmer but has Black body not Blue as yours.
Hope you agree and it helps you.

An excellent set, Carol. All well-taken shots.
Checking through my book of flying things, this looks very much like a Black-tailed Skimmer, found here throughout Southern England.
However, Keith (Ringyneck) went to some lengths to come up with an ID & I could be wrong.
