Morning Carol, a very alien looking creature and superbly captured. Is it some form of wasp?

It's an ichneumon wasp Carol, not exactly sure on the definitive species and haven't got the time to look it up, but that should get you going.....It's not a sting BTW it's an ovipositor used for egg laying, usually into unfortunate caterpillars Sad

Alien and somewhat "evil" if an insect can look evil? It certainly looks quite vicious and I certainly wouldn't want one on my arm! Two magnificent images to start Wednesday with!

For a skinny little thing, he really means business.
And thanks to Ade for the ident. I found one of these in my bedroom one day and sent it off to the Natural History Museum as I thought it might be some strange overseas creature, but I couldn't remember what they wrote back.

Interesting that you should come across a bug you can't name!
The things we learn here are wonderful.
The long 'ovipositor' is quite remarkable.
Well seen Carol.

Excellent shots, Carol - I agree with Ade but can't find an exact match in my Chinnery insect book. The closest is Rhyssa Persuasoria.

H.R. Giger would LOVE this wasp. Its inspiration could very well feature in the next "Aliens" movie Grin
