volucella zonaria

By CarolG
I saw this rather large flying insect perched on my pyracantha yesterday, along with a lot of other insects and bugs. He was about twice the size of a wasp, and looked twice as nasty! I was a bit wary of getting too close, he looked evil! Can someone ID it for me, please.
Many thanks to Karen for her identification.

Amazing macros of these bees...They must be so groggy from all the pollen that they don't bother you... You must be quite close to them to get these shots.....Very well done Carol.....Sandy

I think it's a hover fly called Volucella zonaria (15 - 20mm). It flies May - October in the very south of the UK. (You can tell it isn't a bee because of it's central 'antennae', bees have them either side of their heads). You've captured it brilliantly, lots of colours and details.
