For art's sake

By cats_123
Good Morning all.

My original shot (V2) of the Taj Mahal was taken back in 2004 and has received the most attention of all my shots over the years.

I have re-posted (v1) (hence no votes required) to show the effect of Noise reduction. I recently downloaded `Noiseware' software and have been using it as a regular `manipulation'. The original shot was taken with a Panasonic FZ7 bridge camera and I think the end result is quite pleasing.

Apart from the sizes there is nothing else done.

The original was taken at about 06:00am with the mist starting to be burned away by the rising sun. Still brings back wonderful memories

Thanks for looking. I'm not particularly looking for critique (but happy to receive any) just demonstrating what can be done. Smile

I use the paid version of Noiseware. It is very good but it's best to layer in Photoshop and use a mask to paint in the affected areas. It can soften areas you don't want to lose detail in in some cases. It's especially good for skies and HDR processed images. It's certainly made a big difference to your image! A nice shot.

I googled 'Taj Mahal'. Your photograph was unique when I compared it with the images resulting from the search. And that, I think, is the point of travel photography. Otherwise, you might as well just buy a postcard. To take a unique photograph is difficult, especially when you travel to one of the usual tourist destinations, such as the Taj Mahal. So I would like to congratulate you for taking this unique photograph of the Taj Mahal.

However, I have looked at James' modification, which, I'm afraid, I must admit I might just prefer to the original. On the one hand, the people give the original photograph as sense of scale but, on the other hand, they distract the viewer's attention away from the main subject, the Taj Mahal.
Fab shot!!!
the modification is more postcard look like so i prefer the original.
ps. Thank You for Your kind comment on my shotSmile

Very impressive noisewear, however it would be disappointing if it did only save at 92 ppi.

Beautiful image and I actually prefer this to the original and the versions. Yes you lost quite a bit of detail, but hey, it's misty, if the foreground was sharp it would detract from the focal point which appears quite mystical in the shot.

I found PeterDsmith's comment really interesting, and marked it as constructive critique. He made a very pertinent point about googling travel images, and it's always worth doing that before you go to a location to take travel images if you hope to sell them.

Personally I seldom use noisewear. In photoshop I occasionally make a layer, use surface blur at half values, eg. 5/10, 8/16, and then reduce the top layer and sometimes erase parts of it, until I'm satisfied. I find in that way I don't get the edge blur and also have more control over the loss of detail.

thanks for your comments, Patricia

in fact i have hardly bothered with Noiseware since using it on this `old' (Bridge camera) shot.

The best i got to selling was a 30p credit from Fotolia...haven't tried in earnest, but agree entirely about choice of location/position etc.

I just tend to wiegh up the odds and go for it...not very scientific but I'm not usually that far out. Having said that my ratio of keeps must be around 1/5 of all shots taken. Grin

Have to agree with above, I use Imagenomic and this is excellent also, but does smooth out detail so it needs to be used with a mask, have to use it quite a lot as the Nikon D300s does not handle noise well.
