Yesterday, I was on an afternoon stroll when someone with a remote control airplane buzzed my head...

... or at least that's what I thought at first...

... in fact it was an Emperor dragonfly, the most menacing and enormous dragonfly I have ever seen!

... able to fly at speeds in excess of Mach 10 (almost!)... diving and then soaring up like a maniac on the loose, devouring butterflies and other decent-sized dragonflies in mid-air!

... I thought I had walked into some Hollywood movie set, it was totally surreal, then the huge creature finally decided to land on a nearby tree stump and I tentatively approached, from two meters away...

...I could barely get the whole insect in my 180mm view, it was as large as my outstretched hand in fact.

This detail of the wing, would normally be impressive if it were taken of a smaller dragonfly, but in this case the wings were so large that little magnification was needed...!

... The little image of the entire body I have superimposed here, is actually five times smaller than life-size when seen in the 1000 pixel version.

Anyway suffice to say this is the wing detail of an Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator)...

Never will I just stroll again...!

Excellent detail shot! Lovely colours and textures and I think the way you've framed it adds to the image.

Exquisite detail.

Well done Tim I was thinking of doing something similar in the summer when I have more chance of using the bellows set-up....You given me something different to aspire to again. A well earned HC, for a fabulous macro shot!

I've uploaded something a little bigger today...LOL

Amazing close up detail Tim! You really do know how to spot a picture! and the HC is definitely well justifued here!

I have to confess that Emperors Dragonflies are probably the favourite of all british insects I have photographed and I've only photographed one! Simply beautiful creatures and absolutely huge! First time I saw one I thought it must be some overseas species that had lost it's way as it looked far too good for us brits to be having! I think the one I found last year was only about the 4th dragonfly I had ever photographed but I rate those shots as some of my best simply because the subject is so stunning! It won't be too long until they are around again I hope.

I'd be keen to see a larger shot of the whole dragonfly as the colours look very different to our British Emperor Dragonfly.

theres close and then theres CLOSE! Smile

Great presentation and concept in the first place, quite abstract although those in the know would realise what it was, not that it matters anyway!

I like the inclusion of the whole insect in the corner and like John I would really like to see a shot of the entire dragonfly, please Smile

Lucky ole you for seeing one of these wonders of nature Tim, oh and for the HC thingy Smile
