Thank you all for your kind comments. It is amazing what you see when you get up this close to these splendid creatures!

To answer your question Frank, the difference between male and female in the dragonfly world is often very easy to tell. In this case the female has completely different markings to the male, who is mainly bright red on the face and abdomen.

I agree with you John that it's a good thing these creatures don't grow any bigger! Fearsome to say the least, the most frightening thing is to see them eating with their dagger like tongue! (not too disimilar to the Alien movies!)
