The Fan

By chase
It's her again Wink this time in a quieter mood.

We went dress shopping at an antique place close to me,she fell in love with this one & I didn't pay a huge amount for it as it has some rather nasty 'foxing' on the almost white taffeta, the other panels are black velvet,so washing it is totally out of the question. If anyone has an idea of how to safely remove said markings,I would be grateful for any suggestions....post them here so that anyone else can see just in case there is someone else with the same problem.

Anyroad....lit with one large softbox camera left, second light turned right down, filtered through an umbrella directed towards the bg.
I do wish I had taken this against a black bg,I think it would have had much more impact as I don't have the contrast I really wanted.

Noticing on here there is some horrid banding on the bg,not visible on the raw, tiff or even on the print, may be down to resizing ?....hey ho Sad
Edit : Not sure I can live with it on here,I have looked a couple of times & each time it's getting worse...oh poooo !!

Thanks for taking the time to look/comment,constructive criticism is always welcome & mods are allowed too.
Janet xx

The image is so beautiful I never even noticed the banding till I read it. As for cleaning, removing marks off the taffeta, I have no idea. But it's not noticeable here.

This is so lovely, please don't remove it. I can see the banding, and while usually it would bother me, in this image it almost adds to the vintage feel of the photo. I love it, and to prove how much I love it, have a badge lol WinkGrinGrinGrin.

Very evocative image.
I don't see the bg banding, only moire patterning on the dress but that is to be expected with taffeta.

'Tis a beautiful set-up, Janet - your model just keeps getting better for you, well done, both Smile

I do see the banding - rather emphasises your model and doesn't detract from your carefully thought out composition, although having suffered this type of thing before, I know how you feel...

Janet,
Yes, I can see the banding -- especially in the BG on the right side of the frame.
However, this is still definitely a UA worthy shot.
The lighting is superb -- a result of the careful placement you outlined in your commentary.
The B&W tonalities are nice and rich. Wonderful details -- even in the shadows. Very nice composition and pose.
A superb shot.

PS I suspect the banding is a result or ePz's compression. Others have complained about it in the past.

Alda, many thanks for the GEA..ok,it gets to stay Smile
Thanks too to Walter for your UA,a lovely compliment and you may well be right about the banding issue.

You gotta start 'em early Chris,Paige has been 'under the lights' since she could stand up on her own and she will be 12 next month...omg,how time flies !!

So no-one has any ideas how to get rid of the dark 'foxing' on the Taffeta,oh well, perhaps google will be my best friend Sad

The girl look so beautiful I didn't even notice the banding. Or the "foxing", whatever that is. If it's the small lines, I thought that was just the material weave. It's a beautiful photograph.

Hi Chris,thankyou for your UA.
Foxing is also found on the pages of old books, usually darkish brown spots.I have it on the lighter parts of this lovely dress ( that's why it was quite cheap),almost like someone has dripped tea onto it Sad The lines on the fabric are indeed caused by the thick weave.

this is a gorgeous image.. really lovely.. it is just that, or maybe I am not getting properly - what is that white garment under her arm.. ? I don't know it sort of unnecessary ingredient.. or that is just the purist in me..
forget that.. it is a very beautiful image..

Beautiful shot Janet. Don't think anyone would have noticed the banding if you hadn't mentioned it.

How old is the dress? Do you have any idea what fibre the taffeta is made from?

Sorry I am late answering your questions Adrian,I reckon the dress is about 30 years old but no labels as it has been hand made, probably for a very special occasion..hence I can't help with the 'made from'.It's really thick & heavy with a fairly hefty patterning in the material. It's such a shame the marking has happened,I really wish I could find a good way to remove it without damaging the dress.

Chances are it's either silk or acetate. Trouble is, what would be OK for silk might be damaging for acetate.
If there is a section inside or out of sight, try a little bit of spot cleaner on it. Leave for a few days then check that there is no damage done.
If it's OK then try a little bit on one of the brown spots & see if it has any effect.
Alternatively you could try contacting the costume dept at the V&A museum, they regularly have to clean antique clothing.
