Evening the Odds

By ChiliMan
A very big THANK YOU to Annette (annettep38) for her flowery User Award on my Silly Sunday image Grin

And Ed, I hadn’t heard of the EPZer Ruurd but thanks for mentioning him. I visited his pf and he’s got some super insect images!

-----

Now then, people, I know that there are these photographic “rules”. To me, most of them have merit especially in the right context. But there’s one I recently heard of which I find quite odd (pun fully intended). It’s the rule denouncing even numbers.

So let me get this straight…an utterly breathtaking landscape shot is destined for mediocrity because of that 4th windmill?

B*ll*cks. [oops…even number there Grin]

No idea where this photographic feng shui came from but I hope it doesn’t result in a lot of perfectly good shots being chucked.

Also, I think these “rules” should be conveyed as ‘guides’. Otherwise people coming into photography might think that the rules are the be all and end all of what makes good photography. The result? Creativity loses its wings. Tragic stuff.

Ok…rant over Grin Grin

Here are two troublemakers photographed on my driveway a few years ago.

Your rant is approved and much appreciated, Andrew.
As are your comments on my mannequin this morning.

Hardy they are! They grow from cracks in drains and wherever. I love periwinkles Smile Haven't seen this spotty one for years, though.

Andrew you have put your point over very eloquently and I could not agree more - anyway your image has a very satisfying symmetry to it, even the leaves around each flower are similar.SmileSmileSmileSmile

I do love white flowers against dark green backgrounds. Especially when they're so pretty and there's two of them. SmileSmileSmile

Lovely detail and composition. Don't know about photography, but the 'avoid even numbers' rule certainly works for planting in small gardensWink

Very nice image Andrew.

Ken.

ps, I can remember my photography tutor telling me many decades ago that there are no rules in photography only guides and he was and still is correct.

It's not only photography that's odd Andrew - when entering cookery items at Shows it usually specifies 3's or sometimes 5's. Let's all start getting even Tongue
Your little white flowers are lovely against the dark green foliage.

Love everything about this image. The way the low light has allowed the colours to take a star roll is wonderful. The comp' is just perfect in its simplicity.

It's worth knowing about the so-called rules (oops, sorry, guidelines) and then you can successfully and purposefully go about breaking them, as you have here, and very nicely, too.

Rules????? WHAT RULES? You mean that someone says what we should do when we purchase a camera? They say what we can do? What we can take and what we cant? Who is this preposterous photographic monster?......

I voted yesterday but wanted to have a think about the questions raised. I don't like 'rules' either, but I prefer to think of them as safety nets. Like the Rule of Thirds, the Rule of Uneven Numbers will help you avoid unnecessary disasters, it will produce a nice, satisfying, balanced picture that doesn't ask any questions or pose any challenge. Help you, mind - not guarantee it...
I like pictures that ask questions, make me think, but they are harder to come by. Because you have to chuck the rules out of the window.
This is rather like a double portrait of children, very difficult to carry off. Two little faces both pleading 'Look at me, it's all about me, I'm the interesting one'. But they are perfectly balanced although they wouldn't admit it. Just enough differences for individuality and character.
And it does work.

I think having a pair of flowers in this shot rules you out of winning a photograhic competition then!Smile What a load of old nonsense these camera club judges come up with, such bores they are a bit like the wallies who govern us and run most of our sporting organisations!
Absolutely love what you have to say and totally agree with it. Thanks so much for putting into words (and pictures) everything I have been wanting to say myself. You are a hero!!!
