REBIRTH

By ChiliMan
**** This was taken by my dad, not me ****

-----

Alrighty…now you all know my dad turned 75 on Thursday and got a digicam as a present from my mum and I. Not only is this his first dip into the digital pool, but it’s been over a decade since he’s taken any pics at all…

…hence my title for this pic. ‘Cos of him getting back into photography. Big diff for him, though. His old cam was a Yashica Electro 35 (awesome cam) and this new one is like a little sliver of material in his hands in comparison. So he’ll have to get used to that.

But from this pic, I reckon he’s well on his way Smile

Now I didn’t want to process this too much ‘cos I want it to be “his shot” as much as poss. The only things I’ve done are increase contrast by 10% and decrease brightness by 10%.

This was taken in the evening of his birthday after a lovely dinner. We went for a drive and he caught this sky at a reservoir.

Nice one, Pap Smile

A.

PS The title was inspired by Bill's (the woolly one) comment yesterday about it never being too late to resume.

Get your Dad on the site! He has a great eye for light and that's what it's all about - not processing. Without light there's nothing doing.
I think experience is showing here, if not digital experience - the rays of light and the rim-lighting on the cloud are magic.

A powerful composition and a very good one. The source of light is central, essential here to capture the rays on diagonals: that top right corner is perfection. My compliments to your dad!
I remember the Yashica Electro 35, always wished I'd had one. A much under-rated make.

Wow....that is a powerful shot!!!!! I do hope we see more of him.
Thanks for the help with the orchid....much appreciated. I hope I can keep it growing for awhile. It is very difficult in our cool, dry climate. I have to take it into the shower every so often for some humidity treatmentsSmile

Oh my...first off, thank you soooooo much, Colin and Mari, for your superbous award!

And thank you all soooooo much for your responses and awesome comments SmileSmileSmileSmile

My dad is gonna be over the moon.

He's not a computer person but I'm gonna suggest to him opening his own account and I could always upload for him. Or if not, I can do what I'm doing now and upload his pics from time to time.

Jennnn, I love your idea for a username. Gonna run it by him.

A Smile

Excellent stuff — get him signed up! Grin

I wonder if this would benefit from a little rotation, though, since the shore slopes down from the left-hand side to the centre of the frame, and the rest of the shore isn't really visible in the darkness. There are several possible causes for this:
— the shore being in receding perspective;
— barrel distortion from the wide end of the zoom lens;
— camera not held quite straight.
Whatever the cause, it creates the illusion that the horizon isn't straight, which is slightly uncomfortable and would be fixed by a rotation.
