Saturday Shadows

By ChiliMan
A very big Thank Yooo to Jennnn (taggart) for her very valued UA on the cute little snake Smile What a wonderful thing to come back to Smile

Speaking of which, thanks so much to the lot of yous for the warm welcome back SmileSmile

Gosh…it’s been aaaaaages since I’ve put up a Saturday Shadows shot. Here’s one I took earlier this year. I may have been absent for a couple of months but EPZ was always on my mind…especially when I saw some nice shadows or something for Silly Sunday Smile This was taken at the end of January.

Now what do you reckon, people? The uncropped version in V2? Or with the sun at the top cropped out in V1?

I think V2 for me, by a whisker. There's lovely tension in the lines and angles, all pulling in different directions.
One minor point - don't push sharpening too far, if you look at those near-verticals rising from the stairs the outlines are 'stepped', that's a sign of over sharpening.

Isn't it annoying when one spends ages deciding which image to lead with, you finally decide you have it and everyone picks V2....lol
Anyway I like V1....what an amazing capture Andrew, the best shadow Saturday image ever!

V1 for me, too, but the difference is only wafer-thin. Love this a lot: the kind of photo where it's uncertain what came first, the shadows or the highlights. Stirs the little grey cells round in the old brainbox, keeps them active and engaged Blush
Well, mine need stirring round quite a bit these days Blush

Not a lot in it, Andrew, but I'll go for V1. Very strong contrasts and diagonals.

I give up Andrew. I keep flicking between the two and still cannot make up my mind so I am going to say both equally. I know I used to be decisive but am not so sure now! Cathy

Excellent Shadows image/s Andrew.
"Step Up" or "Line Up" would make possible alternatives to your title?
Wonderful B&W images, making the eye travel all over the place.

Thanks for the tip, Moira, but the stepping is not due to oversharpening here. I rarely sharpen my pics during processing and this one wasn't sharpened at all. The only sharpening happens after resizing...I do Smart Size > Sharpen (PSP X). BUT...the stepping happens before I sharpen. It happens when I resize. Whatever method I've used...bilinear, bicubic, Smart Size, Weighted Average...no diff. Certain lines in certain images suffer the stepping. I'm guessing it's like that moire thing which happens? UNLESS, in this case, the Dramatic Tone filter I used did some sharpening? Even so, I bet the stepping would still be there were I to resize the straight-from-cam shot. Fortunately the high-res image's lines aren't affected. Only the resized version. Weird, huh?

Definitely better stirred, not shaken Smile

Hmm...I probably didn't think of shadows or highlights per se when I saw this. Ok fine, I must've thought those were cool shadows. But I think my primary thought was, "Hey, nice stripes!" Grin

WOW! What stunners. For some weird and wonderful reason the site won't let me give this my UA (?) so take a virtual UA from Spain, excellente fotografia!

V2 for me, the Sun gives that added frisson.

Way hey!! Thanks for the UA, Lynne SmileSmile I KNEW I should have left good and well alone. I was happy with the original. Then I did a crop at the last minute. Most comments indicate that I shouldn't have fiddled...lol
