Birds On Sticks

By LynneJoyce
You will have noted from the last few posts that I am experimenting with and learning about new photographic genres so here is a special Sunday post in the same experimental vein.

I have heard and seen many serious photographers make comments about a genre they term 'Birds On Sticks' so I thought it was time to have a go. I didn't quite understand what this meant so I read a lot of comments and sought advice and help from others. Special thanks are due to Brian65, the wonderful avian portraitist, for his help with the sticks - so kind. Thanks are also due to Mikbee, Lifesnapper and people who commented on their images for helping me understand what they mean by 'Birds.'

Birds, according to Mikbee, Lifesnapper and similarly macho fellows, are the female of the species, so thanks are due to our bitch Helga for posing so nicely on the driftwood stick in V5. I must also thank our dog Helmut who is a great stick chaser and retriever, who once having the mission explained to him, fetched me the bird on a stick in V1. Thanks are also due to the birds in this series who range in age from youthful to elderly.

V3 is especially for my friend Andrew (Chiliman). The model was so delighted by your admiration of her Andrew that she agreed to suffer the discomfort shown clearly in her facial expression and pose for this shot

I am sorry that I have only managed to get 5 images in this set, but as you photographic experts will already know, this is a very difficult genre. Thak you for looking and I hope you enjoy the set.

*** An extra image in response to Saltireblue's suggestion and Glostopcat's expectation that I would - so I did! The original image is a modification I did of one of TrevBatWCC's images and the fish, caught by myself of course!

It's a good job you didn't use a Kingfisher as your inspiration during your research, Lynne. Don't think these birds would have looked so appealing with fish sticking out from the corners of their mouths!
Really excellent work.

This really is a great take on this particular, 'genre', Lynne!
I must show these images to a good friend of mine who complains bitterly that 'birds on sticks' win many of the competitions at his camera club!
Be interesting to see what would happen if he entered an image similar to your excellent examples!!
Much muttering, methinks!!SmileSmileGrinGrin

Great to see what you have managed to concoct here, Lynne: love each version but I have to say V 3 looks a tad uncomfortable for the young lady, perhaps evidenced by her pursed lipsWinkWink.
And I love your interpretations of "Birds on Sticks"........and they all gave me good old chuckle.

A great set Lynne and one can't help wondering how that Spanish girl
found her way from the parade to that stick.
Top marks for humour and any hints on cutouts (refine tool?) very welcome.

V3 is the best species here I reckon Lynne.
V2 stuck out for me at first, but V3 grabbed my top spot by a long leg.
I fear V1 suffers from a case of being overfed and I suggest a course of weightwatcher nuts might be in order.
And to put the record straight here.
The difference between a wife and girlfriend is,
a girlfriend does not suffer from headaches !!

I think you've spoken too soon Malc!Blush Now you've probably unwittingly inspired Lynne to do a follow up series entitled "Birds on Sticks eating lunch" poking fun at gentleman adventurer, Simon Fletcher and his infamous "Lunch" series. He's definitely incurred her wrath with his crass comments and awful jokes on his uploads so I'm sure payback time is due!Tongue I should imagine we'll be treated to birds with mouths full of sand eels, tearing into fresh meat and devouring peanuts and various forms of seeds and fruit!WinkGrin
