Taken at the start of the year, I was walking along the river with Patch and I just got lucky, he landed on this branch right opposite me and just gave me enough time to get this one shot hand held resting on a fence post.

Thanks for looking and I hope a few of you like it.

Regards. - gary

I love kingfishers, but that doesn't mean I love every picture of them, but this one I do like. Having the bird with its back to you, and looking to the right allows a good shot of the head but also a view of the beautiful back and wing feathers. The moss-covered perch is a bonus, and I'm so glad you were quick enough to capture such an opportune moment.

I've only ever seen a flash of electric blue along the river. Magic. I hope Patch enjoyed the moment.

Sounds like an unexpected quick snatch shot, and given the size of the bird you have done remarkably well to bring this one home, Gary.

A brilliant opportunistic capture Gary you've timed this one to perfection and were quick on the draw! I saw a few of these beautiful and brightly coloured birds on my canalboat voyage but with no SLR with me and their astonishing speed they were impossible to photograph
