Its a nice shot Christine. I know your getting used to the kit, but this looks like you dont have too far to go.

Looking at your settings, - Aperture priority is the right way to go, though I would stop down the lens at least one stop below the max aperture. there is usually a very significant improvement in the lens ability to resolve detail stopped won even one stop.

Being a little picky, the gull is not straight, - I know is shot at an angle, so Im not using the rail hes standing on, but the legs, - they should be vertical.

The exposure is good overall, - just a little toning down of the highlights brings back some detail in the white areas.

Ive loaded a mod with a crop, straighten, recover a little white detail, and enhanced that small eye catch light.

hi cristine
as willie said its a bit over exposed on the whites iv uploaded a mod gave it a bit of a crop and a adjustment in shadow highlights and added a bit of contrast.
the overall composition of your shot was good, just a bit blown out on the whites nice focus on the beak and the eye where it matters when it comes to bird photography the main points of focus nice catch light too.
hi thankyou very much for your comments i will try this next time i see whot you mean christine Sad
