Mo and I were once becalmed off Capetown, on our way to Saint Helena island (and South America) in the fog. Nothing tears a sailing boat apart, than a lack of wind, and a large swell. Having no auxiliary in Lapwing, the three of us, (Conlan, our 12 month old son, Mo and I) had to endure the boat tearing herself apart, for four days . It was especially difficult in the fog, because we were still crossing the shipping lanes. It was absolutely terrifying, hearing the foghorns loom closer and closer, and not being able to tell where they were coming from, precisely. (The fog reflects the sound) The length of Lapwing was 25 feet only, and the mast was lost against the freeboard of the tankers. Once, desperately peering through the fog, I was able to just make out a line of rivets, which seemed to be bigger than my head, and stretch upwards forever. . It seemed to take ages to pass, fortunately giving me time to close up, and then we were nearly swamped by the wake ! We were smaller than a piece of driftwood to them, and they would not notice running us down. (ps....we had no radio onboard)
Eventually, we managed to pick up the Trade wind, and, soon we were running before, under triple reefed main and spitfire, because in the Southern Ocean, it is STRONG !
Sorry for the long story, but your image brought the memory back to me very powerfully indeed !

Hey Martin, that's an interesting - and scary - experience; thanks for sharing it. BTW, thanks for the User Award, which is very much appreciated. Smile

Dangerous journey taken by Martin but your wide angle photo of a Hermanus dawn is so peaceful with soft and appealing colour. Lovely. Have taken quite a few pics there myself. A
