Ard Neackie

By CliffGreen
Ard Neackie on the eastern shore of Loch Eriboll, Sutherland, Scotland.

This land feature is prevented from becoming an island by a tombolo of sand and shingle. It is seen from the A838 which is the northern part of the North Coast 500 tour. Before the road around the loch was completed, there was a ferry across to Portnancon from this point. The ferry ceased in the 1890s but the derelict ferry house can still be seen. There are also four disused lime kilns. See versions for closer views.

Loch Eriboll was used as a naval anchorage and was the site of the surrender of the German U-boat fleet in May 1945.

Any comments welcome.

Looks a very lovely place to live, on an island which isn't an island! Smile Not actually visited this Loch, but did visit the nearby Durness on a day out when on holiday in Ullapool quite a few years ago.
