King of the bush

By ColleenA
Meet Scarface....... he is the brother of the lioness who had the cubs I introduced to on Day 1.
He was sent packing by his Mom and sisters about 6 months ago and now he lives a solitary rather miserable hard life on his own, which he is not enjoying. It is always harder to hunt alone. He is now just over 3 years old and we have watched him grow up from a tiny 6 week old cub. He has grown into a magnificent looking lion. His sisters were always dominant over him and he always played follow the leader. Now he needs to find a lioness and start his own pride. We saw him a couple of times over the 10 game drives and he was always lying around moaning....very spine chilling roars that came right from his stomach and really exhausted him. We were in stitches as half way through his mighty roars he would lie down and do the last few roars from the ground. He did not seem to eat while we were there and looked rather skinny when we left. This image was taken at daybreak, we had to wait for the sun to come up to get decent light but he was in the shade so could not get sun on his mane. In the 40 minutes we sat there he never looked at us once, he was so miserable, you can see it in his eyes. He is now being referred to as Scarface as he has a huge cut on his lip and also his leg. We are not sure if he got them through hunting or a fight with another lion, even maybe his sisters. See my versions I have included pics of his lip and one you can see his leg. The last upload is him halfway through his roar one evening in the dark. You can see how thin he is in the last image. Light was provided by the Trackers spotlight. I will show you his sister tomorrow, we found her at a giraffe kill and I warn you upfront the pics are gruesome (will upload them tomorrow as versions for those who do not want to look)
Thank you for all your votes and great comments and thanks Steve for even mentioning my photography in the same sentence as the legendary Andy Rouse.
Have a nice dayGrinGrin

V5 for me Colleen, a rare Image and a true reflection. Normal to get kicked out of the pride at his age. Now he must find a mate and his own area, as lions can protect a 500 sq Km patch for there own territory. Good photography but V5 is an exceptional find..John

I have been waiting for Lenny and I am not disappointed................ Male Lions by nature are very lazy; hence the reason they have a Pride, to hunt for them and feed them............... This guy is in desperate need of at least one wife, otherwise you'll be calling him 'Bones'

A great set of images Colleen.

Tish I was beginning to feel very worried about him and was keen to donate my dinner to him. Hopefully he will find his sister with the huge dead giraffe, she was about 5km away. She was letting none of them know about the kill as she was enjoying eating it alone in between naps.

A fascinating write up of this poor lion. As I understand it, they are very lazy and fail to make a kill more times than they succeed. We're off to Zambia in August (our third trip) so I'm hoping for some good images too! Smile a great set here Colleen!

You see these big cats on the TV... but its not until you get up close and personal in the wild do you realise how big these male lions really are.

Great images - sad story. I wonder if animals are just like people
with some predisposed to being unhappy? You seem to have a good understanding
of their habits. V5 is amazing.
