Ndebele steps

By ColleenA
Good morning....
Thank you for your continued support and to Dave (Mistere) for his UA, much appreciated.
A few weeks ago the management at the waterfront complex in Cape Town decided to launch an initiative to paint the stairs going up from the Clock tower precinct to the city of Cape Town. It is called the Lalela project. In the spirit of Design Capital 2014 the Clocktower stairs were transformed with a colourful Ndebele styled design by a group of enthusiastic students from Hout bay. The youngsters spent two days of their school holidays painting the steps
In the 18th Century the Ndebele people of South Africa created their own tradition and style of house painting their mud huts. The vibrant symbols and expressions portray communications of personal prayer, self identification, values, emotions and marriage. The women are the traditional designers of this art. The tradition and style of the wall painting is passed down through the generations.
The versions are more of the steps from different angles with Saturday shadows

Wonderful colours and good write-up.
One wonders if they will be able to maintain the appearance as it will wear quickly.

A great set of images showing this wonderful tribal art at its very best, the colours seemingly jumping from the screen.

I wondered the same, went there last week and the cleaners were scrubbing bird poo off the stairs with hard brushes...a recipe for disaster.....

What a lovely idea, Colleen, to brighten up an otherwise rather stark set of steps. Excellent captures. Carol

I have seen the houses in photos and wonder what made these guys think it would work on steps that are used regularly
But colourful indeed

A great and very colourful set.
Just hope it's a special paint that will last or it will look horrible once the paint will start to peel off I'm sure.

A great idea to brighten up that which is nomally bland. Don't think it would work here, the rain would wash the paint off before it dried. Lovely to see, and
thanks for sharing Colleen.

If I were negotiating these steps I'd probably end up head over heels due to paying attention to all these colours and not looking where I was going.
What a colourful find.

Love that "Lalela" project. Is a kind of imprinting the flag of South Africa (it lacks any color? mabe the white if I'm not mistaken) Impression that I begin to hear vuvuzelas... It is a good idea to consume creativity of young people in a unified idea, good. Maybe it will disappear completely graffiti on the walls of the cities ....
However, before leaving Cape Town, it would be great to put us as many pictures of the city, from what we see here is awesome!

A striking colour scheme, it would be a pity if it lost its vibranc for whatever reason.
I just hope people don't lose their footing while they admire the colour when they use the steps Smile

Yes it is the V&A waterfront ...and yes that's Table mountain at the back of the image. It is my local shopping centre as we live next door to it...that lovely Indian restaurant has closed down, it was excellent food.
Graet idea; very nicely documented.
