African sunrise

By ColleenA
Good morning from a wet and windy Cape Town
Thank you for your amazing support for my Saddle bill stork yesterday...much appreciated.

The Sunrise above was taken on the morning after the huge bush fire in the Kruger National park. The morning air was thick with smoke and was quite difficult to breathe. As the sun came up it looked like a sunset as the sun was so filtered. The colours are true and have not been manipulated. I will upload a few sunsets as well from our trip. Every evening game drive we stop the vehicle in an open are and we get out for an evening sundowner. My choice is always a G+T, Rob, my husband has a glass of wine. The Tracker normlly keeps his eyes open for predators. 2 years ago he got talking to us during our morning coffee and muffin stop and none of us noticed a cheetah female had approached us. Rob turned to get back into the landcruiser and did not see the cheetah standing 4 metres from him, I screamed, my husband jumped in so quickly after that, she got a fright and ran away.

I am also going to upload some 'BEHIND' the scenes images to show you just how close these animals get to us and indeed how brave our Tracker is...he has nerves of steel. The image with the elephant in front of him actually lifted her trunk sniffed at his face and knocked his cap off his head.
Hope you enjoy and have a great day

The lovely African sky in its glory. Flying over from one side to another when it is the burning off season can be an experience, that is, in an old Super Constellation. My favourite shot, has to be the tracker calmy sitting watching the elephant, and of course the elephant looking at him. Nerves of steel? No nerves would be my guess.
Nice little sundowner outfit you have there.
Excellent set Colleen i just love v1 great workSmileSmile

Amazing set of images Colleen - I for one, didn't fully appreciate just how close you get to these animals! I would need a lot more than a G & T to get me so near!! Wink

Yes Carol, they come right up to the vehicle. I am petrified of the elephants as you have to sit so still. I had one big scare last year when a female elephant put its trunk in my camera bag.

Thank you for sharing a great set of images. Artistically, I very much like what you do with trees and sky. The African sky is particularly warm because of its exceptional tonal qualities. Your technical description makes it that more interesting. The animal shots are naturally quite impressive and do give a sense of closeness to the actual scene. Regards,

So that's how it's done on Safari!
Thin I remember a speaker at Camera Club telling us about some people who complain if their drinks aren't chilled properly!!!!!
Anyway a great set of images which help us understand man's relationship with the animals.
I guess the tracker become blase' after doing it for so long.
Loving V1 today.
