Good morning....couldnt seem to wake up this morning and when I did i tried to make coffee and the milk is sour. A great start to the weekSad
We had a wonderful weekend away in Hermanus... I was spoilt by Rob and given a very expensive Burberry handbag, as grateful and happy as i was....i love handbags....i kept thinking that a Nikon D7100 or a super zoom lens would have been money better spent...GrinGrinGrin
We arrived at the hotel....its situated on a cliff above the sea, we looked out the window and I could see 6 whales in the bay (Walker Bay), needless to say i was out in a flash with my camera. This is when lens envy started creepin in...i had a weeny 270mm lens, many had huge lenses. I had to do the best i could. It is not easy capturing whales as as Alex said to me in a note they are mostly underwater. This whale launched itself out of the water.
They are Southern Right whales....this action is called Breaching and is one of the most spectacular behaviours to watch.
V2 is it landing back in the water
V3 a view of the sea
V4 and 5 a few more images of whales
Not my normal standard but wanted to share them....

All images are beautiful but for me v3 is thewinner.

Wow, lucky you! Thank you for sharing these.

Hi Colleen ! I havent seen whale images for a long time. I think these are OK,but maybe a longer lens could do wonders . Yes, and 7100 is a great, but relatively small (haa) camera, I know. ( Eisa camera of the year). ---- A nice detail in V1and 2 are the white birds flying above the whales. (seagulls?) _ Have a great beginning of the week , Colleen! GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin ---- Jukka.

What a wonderful sight that must have been, Colleen, so glad you managed to capture these magnificent beasts on camera and share them with us. Carol

How fantastic - a lovely set of images Colleen. I agree a longer lens would be handy for this kind of shot. Get it on your Christmas list! Smile

Good morning from a sunny but cold Swellendam Colleen !! Great that you had such a good time in Hermanus. Lovely whale photos - I like the view over the bay towards Gansbaai as well !!

Wonderful 'captures' (I hate that term - sounds like you're taking the whale home in your handbag).
How many of us get the chance to see that?
Well done Colleen.
Not just a pretty face.

A great set Colleen, would love to see thisSmile

What a great sight to witness and what a superb one to capture in this great set Colleen..

Regards Nathan GrinGrinGrin

whoah!! how lucky were you
and what a wonderful hubby you have...

Lovely to see and capture these whales, great memories.
You could always leave it a couple of months and trade in the handbag for some Nikon gear Wink
Kindest Regards

Hey Burnsie....whilst that is a great idea and one that crossed my mind...my husband is too astute for that trick to workGrinGrinGrin

Sounds like you have been thoroughly spoiled Colleen.
I've got a Burberry suitcase which I won years ago - we could be seen anywhere now!
However like you, it's camera gear I prefer these days too!
Great images with the lens you had - I do like V3 with some scenery included too.

Think I would have been rooted to the spot if I saw just one in the wild, another amazing creature. Super shots, love the 3rd image. Maybe the next handbag will be that D7100 with a 500mm lens stuck on the front Grin Grin Grin Grin ...............John

Wonderful scene, not sure you would have captured more with the bigger lens, unless a tripod, etc-- enough to remember!

great images well captured.

Wow colleen, these images are so special.

Ali SmileSmile

A lovely set and it looks a beautiful spot.
(At least 270mm is better than 150mm!)

23 Sep 2013 - 6:07 PM

I know all about lens envy Colleen - I was stood between two guys with the most enormous lenses in a hide the other day and I felt pretty small (even though I've got a 500mm and I thought I was pretty cool until then)! Still the trick is in the shot and you've certainly done well - getting a whale breaching is very difficult as you never know when or where it's going to pop up, and chances are it'll be wherever your lens is not! I doubt anybody could have done better than your landscape!

Great set and sequence, Colleen. I understand lens envy, though you did well with what you had. And they do not hang around to hold poses.

So envious of you capturing these images...I havent been fortunate enough to see whales yet...but one day !!

Great shots Colleen...Grin

A super set Colleen. You could always auction that handbag on ebay as you no doubt have plenty others!Wink It's a pity it wasn't a Hermes Birkin as selling that would raise considerable funds to buy a new camera and the equipment to go with it!Grin
