Moulin Vent

By conrad
Second image from my short holiday in Brittanny last week. I discovered this rather nice windmill close to the Mont St. Michel.

Although I've also taken several 'straight' shots of it, I thought it would be nice to capture the movement of the sails, so I used a polariser and ND filter to lengthen the exposure time. (And I used a lens that wasn't as fast as the one I had on my camera when I arrived, which also lengthened the exposure time.) Using the polariser brought out the sky quite nicely as well, I think.

Any comments, suggestions and mods welcome - invited, even!

Thanks for looking,

Conrad

P.S. If you like movement of a windmill's sails, have a look at my somewhat earlier photo of a Dutch windmill ...

Really like the movement you've got in the sails here. I've been trying this with a local wind farm, but no decent results yet. You've inspired me to keep going.

Strnge. With all that movement in the sails and with the clouds looking like they're smoke coming out of the mill, it looks as if it's about to explode any minute! ;o)

As the Mask would put it: "Smokin'!" LOL. I hadn't looked at it that way yet, but I suppose there's something in what you say, Julian. Interesting.

And Sarah - why don't you try my tricks to lenghten the exposure time, they should work for you, too. Tested and tried method.

Thanks for your comments, both!

Lovely composition and tone Conrad - but I think it's the movement which makes this stand out somewhat. It works very well indeed. Exellent work.

Well that's a first! I've never seen a windmill working and I've never seen a picture of one working. So thanks for that.
A great picture. Very dramatic. The windmill does look as if something drastic is about to happen, it was never like that in Trumpton.

Thanks, Brian, Steve and Chris!

Chris, if you think this looks like something is about to happen, have a look at the shot I've linked to above. Ian quite rightly remarked that it almost looks like the windmill in that shot is about to take off...

Thanks for the comment on the dunes. I am always in awe when I see them.
Love the movement in this picture.

Thanks Conrad. I did try taking some the other evening, but I left it a bit late. Consequently they looked more like dandelions, with just a complete blur at the top. It looks like a lovely evening coming up so I might drive over later.

Thanks, Chris, Georg and Jan!

Sarah - Dandelions? LOL, I think I can imagine what you mean. Well, either do it earlier and use my method, or do it exactly the other way around! Wink
