My "Monet"

By conrad
I wanted to improve yesterdays upload. (A photo taken during the Dutch Meet, at Kinderdijk, where there are no less than nineteen windmills!) While working on it, I had the feeling it began to look like a painting.

Now, I like paintings, especially impressionist ones. Claude Monet is one of my favourite painters. And he didnt only do French landscapes and gardens - he painted Dutch windmills and bulb fields too!

Of course, strictly speaking - if you really wanted to compare this to impressionist style paintings, you would probably have to compare it with the style of the pointillists, not the mainstream impressionists, but oh well... Wink

Anyhow, instead of counteracting the painting-like effect that I got yesterday, I decided to enhance it, so I introduced some more grain to make it look like little blobs of paint, etc. I did not use any painting-effect filters, since I didnt want to make it a one-button process (that would have felt like cheating, somehow, and also those filters tend to overdo the effect, sometimes).

I quite like the outcome myself, but would of course like to hear yours as well. Mods are welcome, too.

Thanks for looking!

Conrad

I love the look of the image Conrad, my only crit would be I would have liked the windmill facing into the picture.

(Maybe a bit of PS work to change nature). If I get time later I'll take a look at doing a mod to see if it looks more balanced, it may not of course in which case you're right and I'll shut up Wink)

Thanks, everyone!

Hi Cheryl! I can see why you would want to do that, and I look forward to seeing the result. But I have shot so many windmills head-on already (there are, after all, about a thousand of them to photograph in my country), that I got bored and started looking for other angles - literally and figuratively speaking. And I still quite like this one, but Im also curious to see what would happen if you did a mod like that. In the meantime - thanks for looking and commenting!

I'm with Cheryl regarding the Windmill orientation Conrad. (Are Dutch windmills "Post Mills" which able to rotate about their centre? If so, the answer is obvious! Smile

Its a good result despite our traditionalist comments and looks very "Artistic". I particularly like the yellow flowers in the foreground

Brian - yes most Dutch windmills are indeed "post mills" - theyre more effective when you can turn them into the wind, after all. But that doesnt, of course, mean we always have to shoot them a certain way. In fact, I often go back to a mill to see if they have turned it another way, which would completely change the way it looks on a photo. Glad you like the flowers - opinions about them were divided yesterday. Thanks!

Really like the effect you have achieved with this. The only thing I find slightly distracting is the light on the bales and personally I might have just toned them down a bit.

This works much better.....some nice detail in the sky...much more detail on the mill and the strong red toned down. The painting effect is just about right, Photoshop's single click version is a bit over the top.
Well done.

I'mliking all the levels to this (didnt see the previous i presume some may have commented on that then) with the flowers, river, bails etc. It does look quite like a peek out through a window also.
