I've reached the point where I wish that I could load an old-fashioned battery in my camera - the kind you bought in the shop, put in, used for a year, and then replaced.

I'm so frustrated by now, it's not nice. Since last year I've had some problems charging the battery for my Olympus Om-D E-M5. I don't know why something changed, but something did. I was on the holiday of my life, and then I noticed my battery wasn't making very good contact with the original Olympus charger. I'd put it in, it would charge for a few seconds, and then the light would go out.

I was able to still take pictures by just regularly taking the battery out of the charger and putting it back in, collecting enough charge, eventually, to take photos the rest of the trip. And that's how I used it since then. But eventually it just didn't work anymore, there was simply not enough in the battery to even switch the camera on successfully.

Since it was my impression that the battery wasn't making very good contact with the charger, I ordered a non-OEM charger on eBay, thinking that might solve the problem. But that created a whole new and different problem, one that completely baffled me (and still does): the charging light would come on, but despite leaving it in there for hours and hours, there never seemed to be any kind of charge in the battery at all, and I still wasn't able to even just switch the camera on.

I even tried a different kind of non-OEM charger, so now I have three, and still my camera battery won't charge enough to use it. And being desperate, I have now ordered a whole new battery, but to be honest I still don't know for sure if the battery is the problem! I'm hoping it is, though, because then tomorrow or the day after my problem should be solved. Fingers crossed!

And normally this wouldn't frustrate me too much, I'd simply grab my little infrared conversion camera and take infrared shots, but that one seems to have more or less given up the ghost. It will take pictures, but the LCD screen only works now and then, and I can't change any settings, the only thing it lets me do is take pictures with the knob on Auto. And I expect that quite soon it won't even do that anymore.

Long live technology. Ahem!

It looks like wiggling the battery about a bit in the non-OEM charger does finally help to make contact, it seems to be charging.
In the meantime I had to use my iPhone as a substitute. Doesn't exactly result in high end photography, but with the help of Snapseed I made it look more or less interesting at least. Mustang fighter plane about to land:

And the next few days I would have had an opportunity to shoot subjects I've wanted to photograph for years! Here's hoping the new battery will solve the problem, at least for my regular camera. My infrared camera is a hopeless case, I suspect. Just too old now. Needs to be replaced, but I can't afford to.
