I Still Can"t Get Used To It

Over the decades, and now that we're already in the 21st century I suppose you could even say 'through the ages', travel photography has seen many changes - especially in the size of the cameras. Initially, of course, you needed transportation for what used to be huge contraptions with which to take pictures. But cameras kept getting smaller and smaller. I remember seeing a Minox 'spy' camera and thinking this must be the future.

Well, if it was the future - and many people do indeed travel with tiny cameras - the trend seems to be reversing. And I'm not referring to people with DSLRs and the like. No, I'm thinking of iPad photography!

The very first time I noticed the phenomenon was when I saw a busload of Japanese tourists photograph a Dutch windmill. A whole bunch of them were using an iPad or similar tablet to take their pictures. I'd never seen that before, and especially not in a large group, and I remember just staring at them, thinking what a strange sight it was.

And I still can't get used to it, I think it's a strange sight, a very strange sight indeed. Allright, I know, they're not holding desktop computers up in the air, but to me it is similar, and I think it looks funny.

Which is why I couldn't resist capturing a few examples of the phenomenon (but no group ipad photography, that might have been a clearer example of how strange it looks):

And the irritating thing is, they take quite good pictures ! !

With a suitable subject of course.

Well, yes, they do - they have a rather good camera. Just like my iPhone, it really takes good pictures. The only reason I still have a īrealī camera is that my iPhone canīt handle every single shooting situation, but other than that Iīm happy with the photos it takes.

Good comparison - both in the size of the device, and in the size of the image files, I suppose, which early large format photographers would probably have been very happy with.
