Open to Suggestions

I just had a look at my first upload ever on ePhotozine: Jousting Knights of Powderham . (Unbelievable, that was nine whole years ago, on the 6th of August 2004 - how time flies!) And I noticed something I'd forgotten about, but which was very helpful: one member very kindly gave a vote, but two others didn't and gave me suggestions for improvement instead. This was the start of a period of great improvement in my photography, and I put that all down to being on ePhotozine, and to being open to suggestions.

If I look at that first photo, and compare it to some of my later ones, especially some of my favourites like this winter landscape , this shot of a little lamb , or this concert shot , I realise that I learned a lot on here because 1. there is a lot of information, 2. there are a lot of knowledgeable members who are perfectly willing to share their knowledge, and 3. I was often open to their suggestions.

Now, that may sound like I think I'm quite good, but to be honest my self-confidence as a photographer, even an amateur, is quite low at the moment, so it's not like that at all. But I have improved tremendously, I've come a long way since those early uploads that weren't much to look at, really, when I think about it.

And sometimes, when I come across an image that could do with a little improvement here and there, that doesn't seem to be getting much attention, and that makes me think I could possibly help the photographer a little, I try to share some of what I know, and make a few suggestions. Many people are quite grateful, and some take that quite well, which is encouraging.

And sometimes you come across someone who really isn't open to suggestions at all and tends to respond with comments like 'it's all personal opinion' etc., and basically just rejects anything and everything you suggest.

I'm not saying that my suggestions are right, and that people should always listen to me, but it does sadden me to see something like this, because with such an attitude nothing's likely to improve. And that's a pity, because surely everyone wants to improve? Hmmm. Or maybe not everyone.

Oh well. I'll keep on making suggestions anyway. Just not today. A response like that does make me hold back for a little while. But it will probably be forgotten again tomorrow.

totally agree with everything you said on the photo. My advice...keep up the good work sharing your opinions many will value the feedback...and just ignore this user.

My thoughts exactly. I'm just taken aback at first, you see, and then have to get it together again. Doesn't usually take long, though...
