The Oxford Dictionary adds about a thousand new words a year, and today a list of new additions to the online dictionaries was announced. Among them one term that not only holds interest for me as a linguist, but also as an amateur photographer: 'selfie', which means 'self-portrait'.

Did we need another word for self-portrait? Probably not. But in this tweeting and texting society I suppose a short alternative seemed handy.

Oh well. I suppose it's similar to photographers calling themselves 'togs'. All in the interest of brevity...
