Silly Little LCD Screen

A columnist for Black & White Photography magazine once wrote a piece about digital cameras and their LCD screens. When referring to the LCD screen of a digicam he had tried, he called it a 'silly little LCD screen'.

I myself am torn between his view, and the idea that I actually like it, even though I agree that it isn't very big.

On the one hand, I like my LCD screen. It offers so much more than the uninformative back of my film SLRs in the past: It shows me if I've got the composition more or less right, I can check the histogram for the exposure, and there's lots of other information about my camera settings, my CF card and my photos.

On the other hand, I've found that looking at this little screen can be deceiving, too. Very deceiving!

How often have I not looked at it, thinking that I'd nailed the shot. After which I moved on to shoot something else - only to come home and find I didn't focus it right, or something else went wrong. The things that I do wrong don't always show up in information like the histogram. And viewing the photo so small on that LCD screen just doesn't tell me how good the photo really is.

I think I have a pretty good idea why this columnist felt so strongly that LCD screens on digital cameras are small and silly!
