St Mary's Quayside

By NDODS
Good Morning to you all.

Firstly thank you all so very much for the wonderful comments and votes following my Sully Sunday upload.

Today's image was captured only a few days ago whilst out and about with Julie and Kizmet. It was captured on St Mary's Island, and shows an old slip with the the crack and tracks still prominent in the concrete slope. The power station in the distance is Kingsnorth which is on the Isle of Grain.

The image is made up from five separate exposures then processed in Photoshop CS5 as a HDR image.

Well I hope that you all gave a wonderful day ahead, I am off the hospital for some physiotherapy, and from then on who knows.

Regards as always

Nathan GrinGrinGrin

Something that I love here - an image which at first sight is symmetrical but in fact is anything but - I can have fun spotting all the little breaks. The rails align perfectly with the bottom two corners but the rack is at a slight angle... The embankments balance, the railings differ; the boat is central, the industrial complex behind isn't. Very clever and very satisfying. Perfect symmetry is is sterile and static, imperfect symmetry has tensions and life.

A good ijage, and once more, lots of good comments. Please, you lot, comment on images that need help too!

I do find the tonal range slightly HDR, here, a bit compressed. I wonder why. No one else has commented on that feature but the tines are different to what I would have expected.

First of all, this photo is neither amazing, superb, excellent or exciting.....at least to me.

I will explain. First the good points.....the exposure is good and I do like rack as a lead in.....maybe something to return to in better lighting conditions and moving in much closer to it.

The lighting is pretty flat, but the composition is messy. As said a good lead in, but there are two subjects that compete with each other, the boat and the power station and then there are parts of boats on both sides of the slip way which again catch the eye. The sky looks as though it belongs to a completely different photo and dominates the image over the rest of the scene.

To me this looks like a record shot that has had photoshop thrown at it in attempt to improve it....and to me it hasn't. Harsh I know, but it is only my view and clearly I am in a minority Wink
a very beautiful shot,first class.

A rather grim looking scene. This may have been intended given the controversial nature of the power station.
In my view an OK photo with a reasonable composition although I feel the positioning of the boat is wrong.
Settings and focus look good.
The attempt at symmetry does not really work because its not clear where the slipway is intended to lead the eye to. Bits of other boats distract the eye on route to whatever the subject matter might be. The boat and power station compete for attention.
As regards the HDR and processing, a pretty good example of misuse. The sky is un natural and over bearing, looking at the various clouds it just does not work.
HDR is meant to expand the dynamic range rather than the gloomy flattening effect in this image.
I think there is a good picture waiting. Wait for the boat to be moved and visit in the evening with a good natural sky and some nice warm light lower in the sky to add some relief and details to the image.

Note. I have made this critique as Nathan asked me to do so by personal message.

Ian

Hmmm. I've just read all the comments and have re-read all the ones which've touched on finer points. At the end of the day it's sorta hard to provide constructive critique 'cos the critiquer (me, in this instance) may not know what the creator was going for.

The HDRing of the sky, for example. I like it. It reminds me of an old painting of a lusty sky. Here it looks like a VERY angry sky about to pick on that poor little boat. The rampy bit in the foreground, especially where it opens up to the sea like calipers, sorta frames or 'presents' the boat. Beautiful detail in the foreground too, especially the track.

I'm afraid I can't give any constructive advice other than this would look, to me, better if it was slightly brighter.

I like this, Nathan. For me, it's all about those clouds and that boat. All the other distracting bits which were mentioned I didn't even notice 'cos my view was drawn to what was, to me, the main two subjects.

But we all have different eyes Wink

Andrew

There are a lot of comments here, some good, some ok and some unhelpful.

The idea behind the composition is fine, but it doesn't quite work. The eye is drawn from the central runner, to the boat and straight to the power station, whoosh, I the out.

I like the use of the lead, but the main problem is the position of the boat.

I'm lost why you need to HDR, HDR is designed to combine images with a dynamic range outside a single RAW, I would be very surprised if this couldn't be combined in one image. Often in HDR you les vibrancy, introduce halos and noise, although with care this needn't be the case.

What I think you we're trying to do is increase detail, hence the HDR, or should I say tone mapping.

It's an almost image (in terms of composition) just consider all the elements, don't just think lead in, or thirds etc, but look and think to yourself "isit harmonious?" If the answers yes you will invariably find its a good composition.

not sure I understand this comment but I quite like the picture myself my only comment would be if possible to have waited for the boat to arrive off centre but I like the lead in and the sky - actually I am lost for words having read all of the above and that's unusual for me - don't lose heart Nathan

I think this location is worth another visit when conditions are better. Landscape work is predominantly about the light, in this image I find the light rather flat, which could be a result of the tone mapping. The sky , whilst looking full of drama to some viewers, to me just looks overworked and unnatural. Plus points are it is a sharp image and is in focus, but compositionally, whilst the slipway provides a good lead in, the mast of the boat " gets lost" in the power station structures in the background. Secondly the parts of boats showing beyond the slipway , distract the eye and generally leave me thinking " untidy" .
Critique is very subjective Nathan , and one mans food is another mans poison.
For me , it's a location full of promise , and one that could provide a much better image in the right lighting/ weather conditions .

I, too, am wondering if you meant to place this image into the Critique Gallery, Nathan.
I fully understand some of the comments above because you always receive lots of votes and comments, which is wonderful for you, Nathan, but you will see that several of your fans have just not recognised that this image has been put forward for critique, and some are even perplexed about the negative comments included above, which are simply responding to the purpose of this particular gallery.
To be honest, I looked at this yesterday and was getting frustrated by the "nice pic" comments, because, as Ian points out, there are clear instructions for giving critique, and these guidelines are being ignored. I think the problem is that members will go to their "favourites", click on the latest image, and just go ahead and comment as per usual. However, if the image had been accessed through the Critique Gallery itself, the instructions are there. Images put up for critique are also displayed in the Photography Gallery, with CM beneath them. People are not recognising the difference.
I have nothing to add to the above in the way of critique.

Loads of comments, and so varied that one could call it a Marmite shot...

I like the not-quite-symmetry. There's an interesting exercise in composition going on in there.

The HDR is another matter: it does look a bit muddy. A bit more contrast in places would make it work for me...
