I really like the image Ian and the choice of black and white was a good one.
The problem with a basic conversion you can end up with a soft dull looking image. Most b&w need to be strong and crisp the good thing here there is two easy things that will make things look a lot better.
Open a level adjustment layer and you will see the sides of the graph empty. This means your not covering the full range. There are a black and white slides just below the graph. Move these sliders in from each side to the point the graph starts.
Second open a Curves layer and click on the middle line across the box. move to about 25% up that line from the bottom and pull the line down, this will adjust the darks. Then move up to about 75% and push the line up to effect the lights. This should look like a S and is know as a basic S curve.
I have upload a mod to show you the results. I just hope I not teaching you how to suck eggs as they say.
Sorry this is for PS but I'm sure Elements has the same.

Hi Robert, many thanks for taking the time to provide your much appreciated comments and guidance on my black and white conversion.
I have only recently started using processing software and am trying to become familiar with the techniques using an idiot's guide, a manual and online tutorials.
Your mod is exactly the effect I would like to achieve and I will certainly try the route you suggest in my edition of Elements.
Ian
