Diligent on the shore

By Cowser
This is a copy of a slide I took around 1975. Diligent is a Stroma Yawl, built around 1906 on the island of Stroma (off the North coast of Scotland in the Pentland Firth) between the mainland and the Orkney Islands. Diligent is unique insofar as she has a stern counter and other Stroma Yawls have canoe sterns.
Originally powered by sail she was later fitted with an engine. A strong and very seaworthy craft capable of coping with waters of the Pentland Firth.
She worked out of Thurso after Stroma was de-populated and her owner/skipper (my cousins's father in-law) became a full time creel fisherman as opposed to a crofter (fisherman and farmer).
She was retired and converted (versions 1 & 2) but I believe she may have been restored by a heritage society in Wick.

A fine looking Stroma boat set, beautiful and sturdy craft. Nice she is being preserved and restored. Thanks for sharing. 1975 era I was living on Kintyre, some very good memories.

Dave 🙂
