Mortimer's Hole

By Cronk
Mortimer's Hole is a tunnel that runs up from the base of Nottingham Castle Rock, through a labyrinth of sandstone passages, to the castle high above.
Legend has it that in 1300 on a freezing cold January night Edward III used this dark, foreboding way to enter the ancient fortress and apprehend Sir Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, lover to Edward's mother Isabel and murderer of Edward's father, Edward II.
Mortimer had believed himself more powerful than the young King whom he regarded as weak and ineffectual.
In September of that year, at Leicester, he paid the ultimate price for his miscalculation when he was publicly hung drawn and quartered.
Mortimer's ghost is said to haunt the tunnel whilst Isabel's voice, pleading with her son to be merciful with the "innocent Mortimer", can be heard from time to time within the castle walls.

A clever piece of art. It looks like a film setting. Andy
