I met someone who had used this set up for shots, but they complained that once the bird has landed there are no interesting shots and that since you only get one approach it is not a good opportunty.
Well I have used this and the river site a couple of times each and I have to say each session is different. In this case the bird came in a number of times, giving opportunity for these mini flight shots. Just down to a bit of luck, how the bird is feeling, etc.
Not sure you can write a site off after just one session. If that were the case there would be many hides I would never have returned to...
