Taken today.

More snow, but Edgar, Jan and Will managed to escape, so now in the cottage by myself. Been photographing small birds this afternoon, but waiting for the camera to acclimatise before taking it fully out of the camera bag into the warmth of the cottage.

Thanks for all the feedback on the other two squirrels and all the user awards - most appreciated.

Such a very well timed shot, great detail and like the snow falling in the BG it really makes this image.

Ah slightly misleading Tony, I was intending to stay on for another week Grin

So when I say they escaped I mean "thankfully they left" Wink

Thanks all.

Hard to get a bad image with such perfect conditions and well behaved squirrels (not!). That is the squirrels are not performing too well, because they don't seem to want to go across the snow, and who can blame them?

Thanks Phil for the UA, really don't want to let this lens go, but I may have to Sad

Yes Colin I know about the plastic bag, just wasn't that organised this afternoon. I even sorted out the lens cover to keep the snow off and then left it behind Smile

No nails Paul, superglued in place by refreezing snow!

If only Red Kites predated on squirrels, a snowy scene of that encounter would make one hell of an EC (or whatever its called these days) and would save space in the gallery - 2 for the price of 1!

Now joking aside, well done for a class shot - the snowy landscape really does add an extra spark of magic and you've composed and taken this with an almost unerving degree of genius!

Want to save time on the "camera warming up"? Put a plastic bag (bread sack or similar, turned inside out to rid the bag of crumbs) in your pocket to keep it warm. When done shooting in the cold, place the camera in the bag. Take it inside tighly wrapped. Camera bags are thicker and take longer for the camera to warm up. The bag will condensate on the outside keeping the camera safe from moisture. When the condensation disappears, the camera can be taken out.

Sorry Bob, just noticed the mod. I really can't tell on the laptop, but whenever I process images I have a standard set of adjustments that works 99% of the time for me. It could be that these images being my first in snow for a long, long time need something extra, but I won't know that for sure until I check them out on the calibrated monitor at the weekend.

Thanks Mike.

ok OK Cheryl

A great photo and worthy of awards. Are they feeding and if so, on what kind of things?
The picture has all the right elements with its nice neutral background tones and the white foreground and lovely russety brown of the Red Squirrel. Driving snow/sleet only adds to the image. Well done!

Thanks all.

The squirrels are in an area that has a standard peanut feeder for birds most of the year. Then at certain times that is supplemented daily with hazelnuts.

What attracted me to this was the pose and the lighting on the front of the squirrel afforded by the giant reflector on the ground, the snow.
