Decided only to upload one version initially and let people make up their own mind - rather than leading them in a particular direction with the variant.

Love the DOF for a start, the mottled green background lends itself perfectly to the colours of the puffin.

Like the light coming through the birds wings, you can see the detail superbly.

Love how its got the sand eels in its mouth and the eye of the birds leads onto its beak and for me the colours on its head stand out.

Love how you have captured the birds shape in flight, right down from its head to the feet, which have been captured perfectly to show off this wonderful colour again.

Ok, not a great crit but Ive tried to say WHY I like it rather than just that I like it. I know how this image makes me feel and think but it was really hard to put into words.

Just love the little "flick" of the end of the wing furtherest away.

Lee Smile

To show off: Display some competency in a skill that is difficult to master - I shall read that as a compliment.

Thanks all. Will check back later, have finished lunch now.

It is actually a very good shot, but I do think we're beginning to show a little bit of anti-robin bias here.

Great shot, no problem with it being a puffin Smile Think there should be a few chill pills available. We all take what we want and also where we are at a particular time. If a few people are taking puffins, so what! I'm sure it's human nature to see something that we would like to try, so if say a good photo of a puffin goes up and people want to try to capture something similar that they haven't tried before, maybe it's a good thing, getting people to try to photograph something they haven't tried before.
Can't cope with all the flouncing personally.

Congratulations Cheryl, I know how difficult it is to capture there very fast birds in flight, it's very frustrating.

Thanks all.

Thanks Pete, cheque is in the post, but it is from a mutual friend as payment to ensure no more ECs Wink

I have to say I found trying to capture puffins in flight one of the most frustrating tasks I've ever undertaken with the camera. And hats off to those that get sharp (but I do emphasise sharp) images with anything less than the top of the range kit. I would not have like to have tried this with a slower lens - though of course I hampered it's performance slightly with the TC.

But whilst the most frustrating, when the results came also one of the most rewarding.

Whatever with all the flack etc you just gotta admire and say it is an excellent shot and fully deserves the EC.

I like Puffins, I have never seen one in real life and rest assured if I get the chance to photograph one I will and then I too will flood the site with my images. That said I too am seeing too many on here, but, they are in season and so I say lets see more, ESPECIALLY if they are of this quality, this is quite superb Cheryl.
Next week we can flood the site with Goldfinches, what do you say people!

Congratulations Cheryl
Its another sharp flight shot and the magic sand eels, not standing still.
I do like these comical characters so much so I went to Lundy last year for them, but sadly only found 2

A good shot is a good shot no matter how often its been done before. This isn't a good shot its fantastic worthy of the award. This should be the level togs aspire to not critisise, anyone who has tried to capture any bird in flight knows how technically accomplished this is, and sand eels to boot.

Excellent - in my opinion.
Colours are vivid, exposure is spot on. DOF is superb - no disturbing background detail.
Wish I'd taken it.
